The Teen Parenting Program PROVEN to work!

The mission of the multi component New Mexico GRADS System:

  • Facilitate parenting teen’s graduation and economic independence

  • Promote healthy multi-generational families

  • Reduce risk-taking behaviors

NM GRADS also:

  • Reduce repeat pregnancies

  • Retain students through graduation

  • Develop positive parenting skills

  • Develop skills for healthy relationships

  • Foster a balance of work & family roles

  • Prepare students for work and careers

  • Reduce low birth-weight babies

  • Demonstrate positive health care practices

The state GRADS System has enjoyed legislative support for its self-replicating, self-sustaining, nationally validated teen parent model. Funding has made a transition from a 1989 Special Projects appropriation to inclusion in the 2001budget of the New Mexico Human Services Department with Welfare Reform funds. These funds flow through the Public Education Department. The 2005 legislature included NM GRADS in the Public Education Department's budget
as a reoccurring funded program.

Positive Results!

The system in 2006-2007 enrolled 812 students in school and 240 Dads in support groups. 169 children of GRADS students were served in our Child Care Centers which served a total of 299; 2.22% repeat pregnancy rate, of which 1.29% were planned; 3.33% low birth weight; 186 graduated and 656 made academic gain; 147 former drop-outs were recruited; 17.12% were employed; 7.14% on TANF; and 100% received some form of public assistance
