WHAT IS GRADS?
This state-wide system began as an in-school program for teenage parents
and has since added on-site Child Care Centers, Career Readiness, Youth
Leadership, and Fatherhood Programs.
CAREER READINESS
FUNDING:
The GRADS System is funded by the NM Legislature and overseen by
the NM Public Education Department.
Flying Hi gh Curriculum and Career Exploration software ensure all GRADS students have the opportunity to develop a Career Plan. Seniors also develop Career Portfolios.
It is....
- a teen parenting program in the traditional school setting which utilizes certified teaching professionals
- teachers working with 866 teen parents in 37 high schools across NM
- helping students learn how to balance work and family roles
- helping prepare students for work and careers (economic independence)
- focusing on recruiting school-age drop-outs
- providing funding for on-site Child Care Centers
- focusing on healthy choices for teens and their children
- focusing on delaying second pregnancies (GRADS curriculum includes approved comprehensive sex education information)
- encouraging prenatal/maternal care to avoid low birth weight babies
- promoting safe family relationships

GRADS COMPONENTS:
GRADS provides training, techinical assistance, assessment, and resources for all our programs. Each site focuses on the ten GRADS competencies, including reducing repeat pregnancies.
Licensed Child Care Centers, which served 487 infants and toddlers (281 were of teen parents) in 2007-08, focus upon modeling effective parenting techniques in an educationally stimulating setting.
Programs use the National Fatherhood Initiative and Meld Resources to provide support groups and improve parenting skills for multi-generational GRADS Dads and community families.
GRADS Dads objectives:
- Engage employment, vocational training or other educational training/setting
- Establish regular contacts with children
- Learn and demonstrate positive parenting skills
- Demonstrate self care
- Access helping resources
- Develop quality healthy relationships
